CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Mion Sonozaki
AGE: 17
CANON: Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni

CANON HISTORY: Mion's wiki page + summary of Minagoroshi-hen, the arc I'll be taking her from

CANON PERSONALITY: Mion was originally born as Shion Sonozaki, the younger of the identical Sonozaki twins. Due to prior family conflicts, the oldest twin was placed as the heir to the family, next in line once Oryou Sonozaki, their grandmother and the current head, passed away. As the younger twin, and thusly the unimportant one, she was excluded from family events while her older sister (who was at that time known as Mion) was always invited.

Even as a child, she felt this was unfair. She couldn't understand why they were treated so differently despite being identical. This led the twins to develop a more fair system, in which they would swap places at times so that both Shion and Mion could feel included. Unfortunately, one of these switches occurred on the day on which the eldest twin was supposed to receive the "mark of the heir" - a tattoo of a demon on her back. This mistake forced the two twins to permanently switch positions, and that was when Mion got her current name.

The twin-swap didn't just result in a name and position change, however; it had a lasting effect on both twins' personality. Mion wound up adapting her new position by affecting a tomboyish personality, choosing to suppress her naturally-girly side in favor of appearing as a capable heir to the powerful Sonozaki name. She refers to herself as "Uncle Mion," acts like a perverted old man at times, and pretends that she doesn't like things like dolls, which later leads to trouble when she wants her friend Keiichi to see her as a girl. Even when he manages to see past her front, she's so used to acting like one of the boys that her pride won't allow her to accept it. Hell, in Watanagashi-hen/Meakashi-hen, she goes so far as to masquerade as her sister when showing him affection, as she's too shy to do it under her own name.

That doesn't mean she doesn't still care about people; it just means that she has a much harder time expressing it, especially when it comes to said romantic feelings. She and her twin sister express their love for each other by teasing and embarrassing each other. She and her friends also are famous for playing "punishment games" together, where the winners get to torment the losers with whatever horrible punishment (wearing maid outfits, doing chores) they wish. Her way of expressing affection, more often than not, is to play around and tease people instead of being direct about it - because she feels that that sort of feeling isn't appropriate for her persona.

Of course, she does care about her friends - more than anything. She's a pretty moral individual, being against killing despite being a yakuza heiress, but she's willing to move bodies and cover up murders if that's what it takes to keep her friends safe. She's notable for being the one major character who never snaps and succumbs to the paranoia-inducing Hinamizawa Syndrome per Minagoroshi-hen, because of the fact that she has so much trust in her friends that the suspicion never takes hold. Mion is even willing to offer up her life if that's what it takes to keep her friends safe in Matsuribayashi-hen, because they are that important to her.

Still, when acting as the next head of the family, she can come across as quite cold. She forced her sister to rip off her fingernails as an apology for sneaking back from school and loving Satoshi, despite her sister's pleas for help, and is hesitant to speak out in Satoko's favor using her name due to her grandmother's disapproval. However, that doesn't mean she always agrees with her family's actions: she ripped out her own fingernails following her sister's punishment to make them equals again, and even threatened to kill her grandmother when she suspected her of causing Satoshi's disappearance. She simply struggles with reconciling her duties as the future head of the Sonozaki clan with her own personal beliefs.

Last but not least, she's notable for having leadership and tactical capabilities that are quite remarkable. Not only does she lead her club through their day-to-day activities, in Matsuribayashi-hen she manages to successfully lead their club to victory when fighting against a counterintelligence military unit. She's not necessarily the brightest when it comes to book smarts, but she's able to reason out the tactics and rationale used by their enemies even with little knowledge about them. Even with their limited training and resources, she maximizes the advantages the kids have in order to assure their victory and keep Hinamizawa safe. She can be easily disappointed when the going gets tough, and tends to give up easily in those situations, but when she's passionate about her strategy? That's when others should beware.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Nothing beyond the capabilities of a normal human, but she canonically has the following:
  • Brilliant tactical mind - as noted above, not only is she able to think ahead and come up with clever ways of winning punishment games, but she actually leads a group of teenagers to victory against a military unit. Keiichi comments at one point that he thinks she would've been a famous war general if she'd been born in a different era.
  • Aikido - in addition to being a tactical genius, she is able to beat the military commander at hand-to-hand combat due to her knowledge of aikido.
  • Firearms - It's implied in canon that she (like her sister) has been trained in firearms, as discussed by Mion in Tsumiboroshi-hen. However, it's unclear how serious or thorough said training was, especially compared to the rumors about flying helicopters, as she mentions that it was part of a bluff to scare the town's enemies into backing off.
  • Cooking - in a more mundane vein, she's canonically shown to be a quite competent cook in both Meakashi-hen and Tatarigoroshi-hen. She's not as amazing at it as some of her club-mates, but she's a far cry better than Keiichi expects.
  • Cheating at punishment games - again, very mundane, but she's shown as having improved significantly at playing games thanks to her cheating abilities. From simple things like sleight-of-hand tricks to memorizing the scratch marks on a deck of cards to gain an advantage, she's quite talented at achieving an underhanded victory.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Kotone Sonozaki (園崎 琴音)
AU AGE: 17
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Instead of her canonical green hair & blue eyes, she'll have more typical black hair & brown eyes. Additionally, she'll dress very differently from canon: instead of jeans and t-shirts, she'll tend to wear a wider variety of clothes, including dresses/short skirts/frilly shirts and the like.

AU HISTORY:
  • Kotone was the younger of two identical twin sisters born into the Sonozaki family, a wealthy Japanese family. She didn't have any other siblings, but grew up amongst a large number of extended family members, comprising a large percentage of the population of their small town.
  • The Sonozaki family came into their money with the establishment of their canned meat company, founded by the twins' grandparents. Originally it started as a purely Japanese company, but when they saw the opportunity, they expanded into an international corporation.
  • Growing up, the two sisters enjoyed impersonating each other to confuse friends and family, but they always traded back to their original identities at the end of the day.
  • She was her parents' little girl, and admittedly a bit of a crybaby when younger. However, with her sister's encouragement, she started coming out of her shell and becoming less sensitive.
  • Right before secondary school, her mother was tapped to head the US branch of the family company, and so the twins and their parents wound up relocating to Recolle. The promotion had been a long time coming, so the family had been preparing by practicing their English skills in advance, helping with the adjustment immensely. Kotone made quick friends after moving, so while she missed her big family, she quickly adjusted to her new life.
  • School, however, was the bane of her existence. Even outside of any delay resulting from learning in a second language, Kotone struggled with the motivation for school, leading to fairly mediocre grades. What's the point in studying for hours to memorize facts you can find on Google in five minutes?
  • She's currently entering her last year of high school, and she's still a straight-C student... but that's just because her priorities lie elsewhere. She's a member of a number of after-school clubs, including drama club (a particular favorite of hers) and twin club (a club she helped start, as esoteric as it is), and is trying to add on a part-time job in addition. There's just no time for schoolwork on top of all that!
  • She's also, in many ways, your typical teenage girl. She likes shopping for cute clothes and shoes, spends way too long (in her parents' opinion, anyway) texting and talking on the phone, and goes out with her friends more often than not. There's a reason she needs the extra spending money that a part-time job would provide, after all.
  • Has absolutely no idea what she wants to do with her future, and so avoids thinking about it as much as possible. Her sister's the one being tapped to inherit the family business, so she's free to choose her own path in life - which is a little intimidating.
  • For the immediate future, her parents expect her to go to college, and have been investing in preparatory materials to help make that happen. Since they'll be footing the bill, she doesn't have too many complaints about it... she'll just go in undecided and figure it out from there.
  • As for right now, she's taking it easy and enjoying senior year. No need to stress any earlier than she has to.

AU PERSONALITY:
  • The most notable change in her personality is that, as a result of not switching places with her sister, she feels more free to be her true, feminine self. In canon, Mion intentionally tries to be more boisterous and masculine than she naturally is in order to prove herself as the next head, and she tries to hide her girlier side from everyone. Now that she doesn't feel the need to be something she's not, she'll be more open about any feminine interests she has. She might even be confident enough in herself to ask someone out if she's interested in them, rather than hiding her feelings and hoping they'd fall for her as she does canonically.
  • However, as a result of no longer being the heir to her family, she also won't have the same security in her future plans as she does in canon. Mion doesn't worry about getting into university or doing well there; she already has a position as the family head lined up, so her future's set. Kotone, on the other hand, will have to find a job all on her own - and she's a little overwhelmed with even figuring out where to start.
  • While she still struggles with her grades, it's for different reasons than in canon. In canon, it's suggested that part of the reason she performs so poorly in class is because the lessons aren't very relevant to her life or future plans, in addition to the poor instruction given at the small Hinamizawa school. Here, Kotone struggles with motivation because she doesn't see the point in learning things that could be easily looked up. When there are so many exciting things to see and do, why waste time in the classroom? Even knowing that she'll need to go to university - and find something to study for a future career - hasn't been very successful in motivating her yet. But that might change as she gets closer to those deadlines.
  • Kotone won't start and run her own games club as in canon, as the initial impetus - getting Satoko & Satoshi away from their abusive aunt for as long as possible - doesn't exist here in Recolle. Instead, she'll be more inclined to join all the fun clubs she can, or start sillier clubs like the Twin Club. That doesn't mean she still doens't love games, though.
  • Also, she's a better actress here than in canon, though that's mainly because she's found it fun and put effort into it. Canonically, while she can pass as Shion with her friends unawares, she still has significantly more tells than her sister does, and has a difficult time outright lying to her friends.
  • Even though she's more open about being feminine, she's still a loud, playful girl who loves having fun. That's part of who Mion is, even underneath the mask. She enjoys teasing and trolling her friends just as much as in canon... though she'd probably do significantly less sexual harassment. She's not claiming to be a dirty old man any more, after all.
